A fellow Scarberian! We live in southwest Scarborough, but I grew up in East Scarborough (Pt. Union road area).

Honestly - it's a long drive, but I think it's worth it if you can do it in one go. You will be exhausted when you arrive, but after a good night's sleep - you will be grateful when you wake up in MB instead of a hotel with more driving to go.

If you leave very early, you will be amazed how fast you make it to the border. We left at 4:00am once and made it to Mississauga in 15 minutes (from the Bluffs area) - which is insanely good time.

If you need any specific information just ask.. we have done the drive to Myrtle Beach many times!

You mean Emporia, VA, south of Richmond?

Haha, yes, I mean VA!

We're heading to Myrtle Beach from Mississauga in two weeks. My husband wants to avoid WV though. Anyone gone that route ?

We're leaving Friday night and will drive until about 11 and then finish the trip the next day

I am not sure why the avoidance of WV as it illiminates many of your best routes. But if he must, one fairly straight forward way would be to get on 90 East in NY until you hit 81S and take 81S to 15 then to 270 and finally hit 95. It is a bit more complicated as that, because there are a few small roads, but this would be the best way to avoide WV.

Is he afraid of banjos? One too many viewings of Deliverance?

This avoidance adds about 2 hours to your trip though

Let me know what you think of the suggested route. I think this one would work well for you, and the avoidance of WV.

Hello - I'm from Ottawa and we've done the trip numerous time in one shot. Ottawa end's up being a little bit farther then Toronto.

Load-up the car the night before, leave at 4:00 am. We usually arrive in MB around 8:00 - 8:30 PM. Still a bit of light, enough to go for a quick walk on the beach just to let the pressure off and the let the body change gear to "slow".

From Toronto, I would drive down to Buffalo, then to Erie (HWY 90) and head straight down HWY 79 (if you leave early enough, shouldn't be a problem through Pittsburgh) , until you hit HWY 77 (HWY 19 is a good shortcut).
Then 74 to Winston Salem. You're just about within walking distance then! nanner
I think that's what the poster above recommends also. Total distance is about 1500km.

Take a look at this itinerary from Bing...

(I don't understand the bit about not driving in WV?? It's only for ~2hrs)

to save money we have driven all day from NJ and when we arrive that first night around 8:00 we get a cheaper hotel outside of town. One year we stayed an hour away, another time we stayed just across from the 501 outlets. It was half the price of our "real" hotel. I figure why pay $200-300 for a night at a place you arrive to and go to sleep? We get up, have breakfast, maybe shop for a bit and go check in. Sometimes the room is even ready and we are getting the whole day for our $$$

This year we are a little tight on time and our hotel isn't until MOnday night, so we'll leave later on Sunday, if we can figure out when the weekend traffic slows down around here. Get in 5 hours or so, stop, then have another 5 to go in the morning, so we still get our whole day. My 19 year old is bringing his own car this year, and I worry about him doing 10 hours straight, so this break up will be good for that too.

It really is safer when you think about it.

Of course now I'm wondering why we didn't book Sunday night? I think because son works retail and often works Sat night. SUnday here in NJ can be bad traffic with folks heading to the shore sunday morning. Then, when we get to DC and VA beach we'll pick up that traffic even if we left here at 5am.

Late reply but we are from Ottawa and have a condo in Barefoot. We drive to Emporia and usually stay at the Holiday Inn Express. Nice hotel, Great beds, especially when tired. Breakfast included. There are a number of clean hotels at the same exit too. Next morning we have just a short drive to have lunch in North Myrtle Beach. I like to drive through Wilmington and then down the 17 into North Myrtle Beach.

If flying you can catch a Direct Air flight out of Plattsburgh New York or Niagara Falls for just $99.00. If just a couple might be worth the flight.
