This might sound crazy but I think a long drive like this can wear on you as much mentally as it does physically.
Throw the clock out the window. If you've heard it can be done in 8 hours and at 8 hours you're still not there. You're going to fret about it. Not worth it....You're on vacation.
I've tried both. Can't say which is best. All up to the individual's drive habits, mood, weather, bladder, time of day, day of week, race week in Charlotte, etc...........
Agree on all of the above. I've gone every which way as well. I have a 5 year old and sometimes have to stop at the side of the road...if ya know what I mean and can't do that on 77 through the Queen City! And after 77S all the way from NE Ohio through WVa, VA & into NC, I like to go for a change, plus I like the rambling roads in southern NC and northern SC...more scenic, lots of roadside stands. Gotta get my peaches!!
Races...brother! Stay clear of Darlington, too...made that mistake.
As far as Ohio...we make fun of our own roads! The only way you can blow through Ohio is if you are going 71S Cleveland to Cincy (and even then it can get dicey around Columbus, especially on a Saturday in the FALL or ANY WEEK DAY. That town grew way before the infrastructure. I hate it. I'd rather drive downtown Chicago!)
I think your best bet is to stick to the interstate as much as you can OH, WVa, VA and into NC that is when you can change it up a bit,
if you feel like it. The best tips are going to be when you get closer to MB ---the approach to your hotel is where you want really good traffic flow info. Where are you staying?
